Book Review: The Lotus Still Blooms: Sacred Buddhist Teachings for the Western World

Genre:  Religion & Spirituality
Author: Joan Gattuso
Rating: 2 out of 5 Stars

This book was very good in places and very bad in others. It is hard to know what to make of it.

I have had contacts here on Multiply who seem to run through a spiritual smorgasbord posting and commenting on articles of every tradition and, seemingly, trying to integrate these diverse traditions into their lives. A little bit of Islam mixed with a dab of Hinduism and a pinch of Buddhism, etc.

Gattuso seems like that to me. A Unity minister who has studied with the Dalai Lama, she claims, although I am certain this simply means she has attended his lectures. And being a Unity Minister seems about as easy as logging onto the Internet and taking a few courses and is a faith that you get to believe anything you want. More smorgasbord.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who was truly interested in the Buddhist path. There is too much wiggle room here. However, for me, there was one sentence that was worth the price of the whole book: "We must have our inner beliefs so joined with these ancient truths that we even dream them."
There are much better books on Buddhism around. Get one of those instead.
